Gifts for Data Scientists Best Seller: Word Cloud Mug

Word clouds or Tag clouds are images of related phrases or keywords. They are a visual representation of how often (i.e., the frequency) certain words are used or how relevant they are to a certain topic.

Creating a word cloud related to Data Science was one of my first designs on TeePublic in my re-imagined aRtVerse print-on-demand store. Additionally, I didn’t want to create the word cloud manually; far too much work and quite frankly I’d be letting down the Data Science divinities should I not try to automate this process somehow.

Thus, I set out to auto-generate a word cloud of Data Science related words, such as ‘machine learning’, ‘artificial intelligence’, ‘data’, ‘programming’, ‘numbers’ … you get my point.

My programming language of choice was R. I set out to gather the relevant words and assign a number to each, which determines the size of the text in the cloud, as well as repeating specific words based on their importance to Data Science. I also took a couple of rounds getting the shape of the word cloud into more of a square rather than a rectangle for better product placement.

Debugging is like being the detective in a crime movie where you’re also the murderer.

After creating the word cloud, it look a tad boring in black and white. So I wondered how to colour the Data Science word cloud and still stay true to it being wholly programmed in R. Thus, I decided to use ggplot2 and the well known colour palettes of Viridis (perpetual colours of blue, green and yellow), Plasma (blue, red and yellow) as well as Inferno (black, red and yellow).

This generated a html widget of the word cloud from which I could extract the word cloud and clean it up in GIMP. I love GIMP – if only I could find a way to code graphic design in GIMP rather than using the mouse – it’ll save me a lot of time and mouse-induced-hand-fatigue! LOL!

I intended the word cloud design for a T-shirt, but after uploading and product optimisation; the Mug came out looking the best – which is not a problem as I am sure many Data Scientist are addicted to caffeine anyways…

My very first Data Science design has also turned out to be one of my best sellers on TeePublic! It makes a thoughtful gift for a Data Scientist (either as a present to friend or to yourself!) since the design has literally been created with the tools of the trade! And who doesn’t appreciate that level of authenticity in a gift related to their passion? Additionally, it is both practical and functional – I am sure most data scientist are too! LOL!

Duotone Effect Process

Duotone effects create a two-tone colour gradient on top of the original image for a more modern graphic design look.

I do not have Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, instead I have opted to learn in GIMP for the time being and I am a bit familiar with the program already. As such I first had to find a step-by-step instruction for creating Duotone effects in GIMP. I used “A DuoTone process using GIMP by Daniel Berrangé” for the beginning of the creation processes and then I went off on my own tangent… 😉

Below is a quick summary of the process. P.S. there is an easier way to do this in GIMP, but I feel that this process gives a more “refined” look…

Step 1: Gradient Map & Grayscale

The first step in the processes is to create a grayscale map of the colours to guide GIMP in placing colours along the gradient from light to dark.

Iceland Horses Step 1 Gradient Map Grayscale
Grayscale Gradient Map

Step 2: Colour Layers and Fill

The second step is to create the different colour layers and to fill each. The shadow layer is a darker colour and the highlights a lighter one – note that complementary colours work best here (blue & yellow, purple & orange or green & red).

Iceland Horses Step 2 Fill Colors Purple Orange
Fill Colours – Purple and Orange

Step 3: Colour Blending

The third step is to blend the colours for a more seamless and gradient effect. However, the colours here are a bit warm here and it seems as though these are Desert Horses rather than Icelandic ones. I decided to opt for cooler colours; a darker purple and light blue perhaps?

Iceland Horses Step 3 Fill Colors Layer Mode Warm Orange Purple
Colour Blending – Purple and Orange

Much better, eh?

Iceland Horses Step 4 Fill Colors Layer Mode Cool Purple Blue
Colour Blending – Purple and Blue

Step 4: Blending Modes

From here on I was just playing around with the way GIMP renders the blending between the layers, either ‘all-over/even’ such as the previous picture, or with a sharp change in the layers with distinct lines, circles or spirals!

Iceland Horses Step 5a Fill Colors Layer Mode Cool Linear Blend Purple Blue
Blending Mode Linear (Line)
Step 5b Fill Colors Layer Mode Cool Radial Blend Purple Blue
Blending Mode Radial (Circle)
Step 5c Fill Colors Layer Mode Cool Clockwise Spiral Blend Purple Blue
Blending Mode Spiral

I like the spiral blend as it adds to the wind blowing effect in the photo. This concludes our experimentation for now and I leave you with the colour palette of the Duotone Icelandic Horses!

Final Touches: Typography

I added a bit of typography to the final image using Canva just to tie up everything nicely! Viola! It’ll make a pretty desktop background, don’t you think?

Duotone Mood Board

Mood boards are color palettes generated from images for design inspiration and coordinated themes.

Both Canva and Adobe have free online colour palette generators, which can extract colours from images. I prefer to use the Adobe tool to select the initial palette and then customise it from there.

My fifth mood board is created from the duotone photograph of charismatic Icelandic Horses captured by susnics available for free download from Pixabay.

Several mood board design resources are freely available from Mind Frame Shift for your design projects! You can find the Pinterest Board Here!

Graphic Design Challenge: Samurai Sisters Movie Poster

About The Challenge

Every so often the Lindsay Marsh; the creator of the first Graphic Design course that I took in December 2019, “The Complete Graphic Design Theory for Beginners Course”, runs a design challenge for the students via its Facebook group.

Generally I try to participate in these challenge as many of them pertain to graphic design techniques/media that I generally would not indulge in myself – I do graphic art as part of my Data Art and Graphic Art portfolios.

Initially, I didn’t feel like participating in this challenge. It was only after I did the concept development and creation of the Samurai Sisters T-shirt design that I decided to submit an entry inspired from the T-shirt!

Samurai Sisters T-shirt Concept
A Simple Pencil Sketch

The challenge guidelines were as follows:

  • You could redo a poster from a previous movie. Alternatively as a bonus you can make up one yourself – I obviously went for the second option.
  • The poster has to include a main title, focal point and the main actors names. Another bonus is to add extra credits such as the composer, the director, the producer, etc. – I tried to incorporate as much that wouldn’t clutter the final image

The challenge workflow was as follows:

  • Choose a movie genre – Here mine would be a urban sci-fi action. I did not disclose this upfront as I wanted the poster to portray that automatically.
  • Create a plan or concept layout – I did this, but forgot to submit it along with the challenge LOL!
  • Create and showcase the final movie poster – I completed the poster over a little more than a week and then amused myself with a movie merchandise advert too!

Design Process

Here is my movie poster layout, which I forgot to submit… but there were so many submission that I don’t think it mattered much.

Graphic Design Challenge Movie Poster Samurai Sisters Concept Plan Layout
Movie Poster Concept Layout & Planning

So my thoughts here were to have the main typographic elements (i.e. the title text) be separated from each other by the samurai sword. In the original concept design for the t-shirt, you would notice that I did add the traditional samurai sword initially. But after some browsing on the internet I settled for the more ‘modern’ one to fit in with the modern Asian typography.

Afterwards I added the blood splatters to give it more action and movement.

Then I wanted to add a feminine accent as the original T-shirt slogan was meant as a women empowerment design with an updated more kick-ass look rather than just some hippy typography with the words “Girl Power”. I wanted to do something more original that is feminine but fierce!

With the main focal point and title inherited from the T-shirt design I added the photographs of Serinda Swan and Melissa O’Niel – they are both Canadian actresses who have done powerful female roles. I wanted to keep with the strong female aspect of the original design. It took me forever to find the photos, I wanted photos with attitude and most were model/high fashion photos. I found these and then fixed them up a bit and converted them to greyscale. Each actress then got a position on either side of the poster.

I added the subtitle between the two actresses and then moved on to the bottom credit section with a few hours of adjusting things a pixel this way, that way. 😁

Considering that this is a modern urban sci-fi action, I decided to look for people to support ‘My Vision’ – such that Robert Rodriguez was the producer of Alita Battle Angel, Titus Welliver was the director of Bosch and Adrian von Ziegler who makes awesome sci-fi music!

Final Result

All of that lead to the final poster:

Challenge Conclusion

I was glad to have participated in the challenge after all as it was great fun once I had an initial muse. I also got great feedback from Lindsay Marsh during the review process! She was impressed that I was able to create all of the elements using GIMP (a free photo manipulation and digital art program).

“Love the title, splashing and I love the sword here… The Samurai Sister icon is excellent work with the typography, headline and title… Overall really really good”

Lindsay Marsh

I got some suggestions to add profile pictures for more connection to the story and emotional connection to the actresses faces. But as she mentioned during the review I did not have access to the photos I would have wanted and I made do with what I had. I wanted attitude and stank-face! 🤨

Another suggestion was the centre alignment of the subtitle between the two actresses – I purposefully did not go with the centre alignment here as the poses of the actresses are very different and the centre alignment would make the text too close to Serinda and far away from Melissa – which results in a lop-sided look. So here I am going to stick to my artistic choice! LOL! 🤗

It is interesting to see how one little 5 cm pencil sketch can grow into a T-shirt design and Movie Poster!

Great fun indeed and I am looking forward to the next challenge!

Phyllotaxis inspired designs available on various apparel and products

Last year I started experimenting with mathematical formulas and data algorithms to generate art, specifically using code scripts created in R.

The first time I stumbled upon math art in R was when I saw the phyllotaxis patterns project on DataCamp created by the Mathematician A. Chinchón last year sometime. He maintains an extensive blog Fronkonstin where he regularly publishes new math art projects. He provides all the scripts he uses and encourages his readers to create their own art using these scripts.

I have started to mess around with several of these math art concepts and mashed-up many ideas from around the internet. I am not a mathematician, but I can use R and entertain myself with these scripts to create all sorts of interesting restults. Yes, I am that kind of nerd… LOL!

I have slowly progressed to writing R “art” code completely by myself as well! Those will be featured on the blog in future posts.

Phyllotaxis in Cacti

In botany, phyllotaxis or phyllotaxy is the arrangement of leaves on a plant stem (from Ancient Greek phýllon “leaf” and táxis “arrangement”). Phyllotactic spirals form a distinctive class of patterns in nature.

Some early scientists—notably, Leonardo da Vinci—made observations of the spiral arrangements of plants. In 1754, Charles Bonnet observed that the spiral phyllotaxis of plants were frequently expressed in both clockwise and counter-clockwise golden ratio series. Mathematical observations of phyllotaxis followed with Karl Friedrich Schimper and his friend Alexander Braun’s 1830 and 1830 work, respectively; Auguste Bravais and his brother Louis connected phyllotaxis ratios to the Fibonacci sequence in 1837.

Phyllotaxis Collages

I originally created these collages from free photos on Pixabay to sell at my design eShop on Zazzle, but I have since closed my store there as I felt that they were ripping-off our designer community – so I left and started anew on Teepublic. These collages do not vibe with aRtVerse’s reincarnation and thus I made them available here as free design resources!
