Gifts for Data Scientists Best Seller: Word Cloud Mug

Word clouds or Tag clouds are images of related phrases or keywords. They are a visual representation of how often (i.e., the frequency) certain words are used or how relevant they are to a certain topic.

Creating a word cloud related to Data Science was one of my first designs on TeePublic in my re-imagined aRtVerse print-on-demand store. Additionally, I didn’t want to create the word cloud manually; far too much work and quite frankly I’d be letting down the Data Science divinities should I not try to automate this process somehow.

Thus, I set out to auto-generate a word cloud of Data Science related words, such as ‘machine learning’, ‘artificial intelligence’, ‘data’, ‘programming’, ‘numbers’ … you get my point.

My programming language of choice was R. I set out to gather the relevant words and assign a number to each, which determines the size of the text in the cloud, as well as repeating specific words based on their importance to Data Science. I also took a couple of rounds getting the shape of the word cloud into more of a square rather than a rectangle for better product placement.

After creating the word cloud, it look a tad boring in black and white. So I wondered how to colour the Data Science word cloud and still stay true to it being wholly programmed in R. Thus, I decided to use ggplot2 and the well known colour palettes of Viridis (perpetual colours of blue, green and yellow), Plasma (blue, red and yellow) as well as Inferno (black, red and yellow).

This generated a html widget of the word cloud from which I could extract the word cloud and clean it up in GIMP. I love GIMP – if only I could find a way to code graphic design in GIMP rather than using the mouse – it’ll save me a lot of time and mouse-induced-hand-fatigue! LOL!

I intended the word cloud design for a T-shirt, but after uploading and product optimisation; the Mug came out looking the best – which is not a problem as I am sure many Data Scientist are addicted to caffeine anyways…

My very first Data Science design has also turned out to be one of my best sellers on TeePublic! It makes a thoughtful gift for a Data Scientist (either as a present to friend or to yourself!) since the design has literally been created with the tools of the trade! And who doesn’t appreciate that level of authenticity in a gift related to their passion? Additionally, it is both practical and functional – I am sure most data scientist are too! LOL!

Algorithmic Art: Flowers, Roses and Rhodonea Curves

In mathematics, a rose or rhodonea curve is a sinusoid plotted in polar coordinates. Available on apparel and other print on demand products

Algorithmic or algorithm art includes designs generated by an algorithm. Algorithmic artists are sometimes called algorists.

I wrote the R script to generate the featured data art all by myself using the concepts of Rose Curves and in the process was able to have an in-depth look into what really happens during the construction of code-generated flowers.

Rose Curves

In mathematics, a rose or rhodonea curve is a sinusoid plotted in polar coordinates.

These curves can all be expressed by a polar equation of the form,

r = cos(kΘ)

In short, rose curves are interlocking loops connected at a central point, much like one would draw a simple flower with the free hand.

They are created with two parameters when generated by computers:

  • n = number of points
  • d = number of loops

During construction, the n and d parameter works together to generate the number of petals (as a multiple of k):

  • k = n/d
  • when k is even then the number of petals equals k (or k*1)
  • when k is odd then the number of petals equals k * 2

This makes more sense when you follow the graph below

Mathematical “rose” or “rhodonea” curves,

In this chart, the values of parameter n varies from 1 to 7,
while d varies from 1 to 9.

The top graph is generated with lines, I generated similar plots using points and polygons.

It seems that the algorithm merely repeats itself at various places, especially when the ratio between n and d is 1:1 such as along the diagonal line from the top left to right of the image.

However, the polygon plots reveal that this is not the case!

Here you would notice that the plots are generated in repeating loops and that the width/thickness of these loops increases as we move diagonally down the graph.

This makes for far more interesting shapes, especially with the custom colouring that I coded into the loops!

For the last year or so I have been investigating ways in which to create art from mathematical formula and data algorithms. I started off with simple golden spirals and got hooked on how to code and generate other types of artsy visuals using data. Check out my Phyllotatic Spirals and Mandala Dragonflies!

It has been captivating to see how mathematical formulas and some creative plotting can generate some of the most interesting, beautiful and unusual geometric shapes.

Not to mention all the practice I get in various ways of coding, data analysis and visualization techniques! So here is another showcase of some of the shapes I have generated and how I have put them together to create something unique! #DataScienceRocks 😁

This is one of my designs inspired by the mystery and magic of dream catchers. This is a Data Catcher created with randomly generated data in R studio using Chord diagrams for the main body and beads, as well as Branching dendograms for the feathers. The colours were generated in the Plasma colour palette in ggplot2; perceptually uniform shades of blue red yellow. All of this is placed on a black background to make the design glow.

Several dream catcher designs and various colour versions are available!

Mandala Dragonfly | Citrine Emerald Sapphire Yellow Green Blue (Black)

This is one of my designs inspired by the beauty of jewel toned dragonflies created with specially generated data in R studio using polygon algorithms for the mandalas and circular bar charts for the wings.

The dragonfly above contains polygon mandalas including, triangles (3 points) for the mouthparts and pentagons (5) for the head. The body consists of heptagons (7), an octagon (8), a nonagon (9), a decagon (10), a hendecagon (11) and a tridecagon (13) – not in that order necessarily. Finally a pair of hexadecagons (16) make up the eyes. Now that’s quite a mouthful! 😋

The polygons and charts were generated using the ggplot2 package in the Viridis color palette; such that you get a perceptually uniform palette of shades in blue-green-yellow. All of this is placed on a black background to make the colours pop.

Several dragonfly designs and various colour versions are available!

A design inspired by the mysteries of space and collision between astronomical objects, created with specially generated genetic data in R studio using polygon density plots in ggplot2.

The initial plot compared the linear relationship of expression levels between two gene sets in RNA data.

Generated in the Inferno palette and additional flames/radioactivity colours added with GIMP on a black/white background, respectively.

Last year I started experimenting with mathematical formulas and data algorithms to generate art, specifically using code scripts created in R.

The first time I stumbled upon math art in R was when I saw the phyllotaxis patterns project on DataCamp created by the Mathematician A. Chinchón last year sometime. He maintains an extensive blog Fronkonstin where he regularly publishes new math art projects. He provides all the scripts he uses and encourages his readers to create their own art using these scripts.

I have started to mess around with several of these math art concepts and mashed-up many ideas from around the internet. I am not a mathematician, but I can use R and entertain myself with these scripts to create all sorts of interesting restults. Yes, I am that kind of nerd… LOL!

I have slowly progressed to writing R “art” code completely by myself as well! Those will be featured on the blog in future posts.

Phyllotaxis in Cacti

In botany, phyllotaxis or phyllotaxy is the arrangement of leaves on a plant stem (from Ancient Greek phýllon “leaf” and táxis “arrangement”). Phyllotactic spirals form a distinctive class of patterns in nature.

Some early scientists—notably, Leonardo da Vinci—made observations of the spiral arrangements of plants. In 1754, Charles Bonnet observed that the spiral phyllotaxis of plants were frequently expressed in both clockwise and counter-clockwise golden ratio series. Mathematical observations of phyllotaxis followed with Karl Friedrich Schimper and his friend Alexander Braun’s 1830 and 1830 work, respectively; Auguste Bravais and his brother Louis connected phyllotaxis ratios to the Fibonacci sequence in 1837.

aRtVerse – An Universe where R, Art & Maths Collides

Finally the whole collection of phyllotactic spirals with single or multiple arms inspired by the different ways in which leaves can arrange on plant stems. The spirals were generated with individual points using R code in the Inferno/Volcano (top right), Plasma/Sunset (bottom left) and Viridis/Peacock (bottom right) colour palettes.
